LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY
Ensuring your peace of mind

Welcome to Guiding Light

Many people feel confused or scared by the phrase ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’, I know my parents felt that way. Their perception was that they were being asked to relinquish all control over their finances and health, a daunting proposition for anyone used to being independent.
However, the truth is by getting yourself a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ you will have peace of mind as you grow older. It will safeguard your future so that should you need help, your named loved ones will have legal power to help you carry out your requests.
An LPA (Lasting Power of Attorney) can come into effect as soon as it is registered OR when you are lacking mental capacity, it’s your choice.

Why get an LPA?

Have you ever considered the potential impact on your home and finances if you were no longer able to manage your money or personal affairs? After a lifetime of hard work, it’s only fair that you have the ability to determine who should have control over your matters in case you become incapable of doing this yourself. You may assume that your partner or close family members will automatically have the authority to make decisions on your behalf, but unfortunately, that is not the case. They would actually require legal permission to handle your financial responsibilities or make important choices regarding your well-being.

There are two types of LPA, acquiring BOTH will cover you for every eventuality:

1. Property & Finance LPA:

This enables your loved ones to handle tasks such as paying bills, managing bank accounts, buying or selling a house, and managing investments. It can be used immediately or when you are no longer able to make decisions on your own.

2. Health & Welfare LPA:

This appoints a person or persons to make decisions about your health and care.
It can only be used when you are unable to make decisions on your own.

Why get an LPA in place now?

If you ever find yourself unable to handle your own financial matters, appointing someone through a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) can provide invaluable assistance. This ensures that the person you have chosen will be able to manage your finances on your behalf, always prioritizing your best interests. Not only does this save you from potential financial troubles and emotional distress, but it also guarantees that your affairs will be handled promptly and correctly, especially if you are considered to be vulnerable.

Various health conditions, such as injurys incurred through accidents, strokes, brain injuries, dementia and Parkinson’s disease, can impact your decision-making abilities. To alleviate any future challenges, organizations caring for those in need strongly encourage everyone to plan ahead. By doing so, you not only ease the burden on your loved ones, but you also potentially save a significant amount of money in the process.
