In 2022, my brother and I faced a very difficult situation when our parents’ health started deteriorating rapidly, making daily life a real struggle for them. Things escalated when our dad had to be hospitalised due to a lung condition and our mum was unable to look after herself. It became clear to us that both our parents needed residential care.

A friend advised me that we would require a “Lasting Power of Attorney” in order to assist them effectively. Initially, we considered seeking professional help from a solicitor, but the cost they quoted for preparing the necessary documents shocked us. Their fee was £700 for each document, which amounted to a staggering total of £2800 for all four LPAs (2 each). Unfortunately, this was an expense we couldn’t afford, so I embarked on a journey of self-research to figure out how to handle it ourselves. It took hours of studying and navigating through complex forms on Gov.uk, but I eventually managed to do it! Having the LPAs in place empowered me to take care of essential tasks like paying bills, accessing benefits, and making important decisions about their healthcare.

This experience inspired me to establish “Guiding Light,” a heartfelt initiative aimed at providing assistance to individuals facing similar struggles. Whether you’re unsure where to begin, overwhelmed by stress, or simply wish to avoid exorbitant fees, I am here to lend a helping hand and we’ll go through the process TOGETHER.
